Sunrise over Dunedin
The Otago Coast on the South Island’s eastern shore, stretches from the Waitaki River to the Clutha River. Halfway between is the city of Dunedin, whose name is the old Gaelic one for Edinburgh—appropriate since the city was established by Scottish settlers.
Dunedin is New Zealand’s oldest city, founded on the picks, harpoons and hard toil of goldminers and whalers . Today, this university-centric town possesses a unique combination of cultural riches, architectural treasures, and the world-famous wildlife reserves on the OtagoPeninsula just across the harbour.
