The Auckland metropolitan area on the North Island is the largest and most populous urban area in the country. With a population of over 1.4 million residents, it can also claim the largest gay and lesbian community in the nation. Locals refer to the inner city district as The Gay Republic; it is comprised of Ponsonby, Grey Lynn, Herne Bay, St. Marys Bay, Parnell, Newmarket, Newton and Kingsland.
There’s more to New Zealand’s gatetway city than Queen Street…there’s a buzzing shopping strip called Newmarket, an eat street in Ponsonby, and a buzzing night life on K Street.
