Auckland getaway Waiheke Island only short ferry ride but a world away

The mere mention of Waiheke Island is enough to put a smile on anyone’s face. It is a great place to go to loosen up, kick back and have fun. There is a great range of things to do, including adventure both on and off the water, a mix of arts and crafts, several sightseeing opportunities, tours, walks, restaurants, cafes and wineries, beaches, island shopping, and events.

If you can get there by air links or car ferry over Easter, you will catch the 2011 International Jazz Festival (22-25 April). Waiheke is going to be pumping with a host of local, New Zealand and international artists performing at various venues around the island.

Whatever season or reason gets you there, be sure to make your accommodation arrangements early. The gay-owned Moanavista B&B, located on Queens Drive, no less, is a cosy, romantic, Tuscan-inspired bed and breakfast overlooking Oneroa Bay. Set in established gardens featuring a large flame tree and an olive grove, the inn has a wonderfully tranquil atmosphere conducive to total rest and relaxation.

Whether you are in the upstairs Moana Suite or the restored 1939 Cottage, sea views, fine linens and plenty of luxurious R&R await. Hosts Matthew and Tim possess that ability to put you instantly at ease so you can immediately slip into holiday mode.
